• Hungarian American Coalition Announces Winners of the Dr. Elemér and Éva Kiss Scholarship for 2008-2009 Academic Year

  Six students were awarded the Dr. Elemér and Éva Kiss Scholarship Awards for the 2008-2009 academic year. The winners are: Eszter Győri, a graduate of the International Christian School of Budapest (ICSB), who has been admitted to Sewanee: The University of the South; Betty Henkel, a graduate from the Transcarpathian Hungarian College, admitted to study Liberal Arts at Trocaire College, Buffalo, NY; Enikő Horváth, a graduate from Corvinus University of Budapest, admitted to Harvard University to study Government with an emphasis on International Relations; Noémi Keszler a graduate from The Field School, Washington, D.C. where she transferred as a senior in high school from Romania. Ms. Keszler is an undergraduate student at Ohio Wesleyan University; Mirjam Donath who has been admitted to Columbia University, NY; and Zsófia Schwéger who has been admitted to Wellesley College.   László Böjtös, Council Member of Hungarian Communion of Friends, Cleveland’s Honorary Consul of Hungary, is New Chairman of the Board On December 6, 2008, the Hungarian American Coalition (Coalition) held its 17th Annual General and Board Meetings at the Kossuth House in Washington, DC. • Five Noted Hungarian Researchers Receive the Charles Simonyi Research Scholarship Award

  Five noted Hungarian researchers received the Charles Simonyi Research Scholarship Award at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in Budapest. The annual award was first established in 2000 by Dr. Charles Simonyi, with additional funds provided in 2006 and renewed twice subsequently – with the cooperation of the Hungarian American Coalition – to serve the goal of encouraging outstanding scientific research by Hungarians. • Visa Waiver Program Expanded to Include the Republic of Hungary

  President Bush is expected to announce the expansion of the Visa Waiver Program (VWP) on Friday, October 17 at a White House Rose Garden ceremony. The Hungarian American Coalition (HAC) is pleased to confirm that the Republic of Hungary will be among the five countries qualified to join the VWP.   On June 12, the Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation hosted a historic event attended by U.S. Secretary of Commerce Carlos Gutierrez, U.S. House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, and many other distinguished participants from Capitol Hill and Washington's diplomatic corps. The wreath-laying ceremony at the Victims of Communism Memorial featured speakers: Rep. Thaddeus McCotter (R-MI); Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-OH); Rep. Steve King (R-IA); Rep. Shelley Berkley (D-NV); Rep. Jackie Speier (D-CA), Rep. Eliot Engel (D-NY); Rep. Anna Eshoo (D-CA) and former Rep. Don Ritter (R-PA).
