The text of the message follows: "The White House Washington October 22, 2010 I send greetings to all those celebrating the 54th anniversary of the Hungarian Revolution. The Hungarian people's struggle against tyranny neither began nor ended in October 1956. Yet, the lasting effects of the Hungarian Revolution that autumn advanced the cause of freedom throughout Eastern Europe, carrying the bright light of liberty to the darkest corners of oppression. On this occasion, we both honor Hungary's journey as a sovereign nation, and we recognize the bonds between our peoples and countries. Hungary remains a steadfast friend and valued NATO ally. • Standing Conference of Hungarians (MÁÉRT) Held in Budapest

  On Friday, November 5, 2010, the Ninth Hungarian Standing Conference (MÁÉRT) was held in the Hungarian Parliament. Nineteen delegations of Hungarians from all over the world and representatives of Hungarian political parties gathered to discuss the plans of the Orbán government to assist Hungarians outside the country’s borders to strengthen their identity and to prevent further assimilation in the Carpathian Basin and the Western Diaspora Hungarian communities. • 5th Hungarian Americans Together (HATOG) Conference

  Coordination in raising relief funds for the victims of the red-sludge disaster in Hungary was added to the cultural agenda when thirty-five Hungarian American leaders of 22 organizations from eight states gathered on October 9-10, 2010, at the Norridge United Church of Christ (Hungarian Reformed Church). The Conference was hosted by the Hungarian Club of Chicago, the Hungarian Society of Chicago, St. Stephen, King of Hungary Catholic Church, the Transylvanian Association, the Hungarian Communion of Friends, the Hungarian Cultural Advisory Council, and the Hungarian-Americans for Human Rights in Délvidék. • Coalition's Relief Fund to Help Victims of Red Sludge Disaster in Hungary

  Graphic photographs in the international media have stunned and saddened concerned citizens around the world: on October 4, the wall of a reservoir at an alumina plant in northwest Hungary collapsed, unleashing a flood of toxic red sludge that killed 6 people until now and injured more than 120, according to the Hungarian government’s spokesman. Several towns were virtually destroyed, displacing hundreds of residents, who will probably never be able to return home. While its full long-term impact is not yet clear, the event represents a human and environmental disaster affecting not only the immediate region, but the larger ecosystem as well. More...

  Today, June 4, 2010, marks the 90th anniversary of what many consider the darkest day of 20th century Hungarian history - the post-World War I Treaty of Trianon. Hungarians all over the world recall the tragic injustice of the dismemberment of Hungary, as the nation lost two-thirds of its territory, over half of its population, its sea access and most of its natural resources. While millions of ethnic Hungarians stayed in their historic communities, the borders shifted around them. • In Memoriam: András Sütő, Hungarian Writer and Human Rights Advocate

  On March 19, 1990 – 20 years ago this week – András Sütő, the outstanding Hungarian writer and respected human rights advocate, was nearly beaten to death by a mob transported by Romanian nationalists to the town of Tirgu Mures (Marosvásárhely), Romania. Sütő lost an eye in the attack. Pictures of a badly beaten Sütő appeared in newspapers dashed hopes for improved relations between Romanians and the Hungarian minority, just months after the Romanian revolution had toppled the universally hated Ceausescu regime. • The Benefits of Documenting Hungarian Heritage in the 2010 US Census

  The U.S. Census counts every resident in the United States and takes place every ten years, as required by the Constitution. This year, the Census Bureau is mailing out census forms in March. The government has simplified the form, which now consists of only ten short questions. Question number 9, which asks for information about race, but also allows citizens to record their heritage, nationality group, and ethnicity, gives the Hungarian-American community an excellent opportunity to provide the government with an accurate estimate of the number of US residents with Hungarian ancestry.
