• In Memoriam Otto Avvakumovits

  December 30, 2011

  Otto Avvakumovits, Hungarian-American community leader and long-time Coalition supporter, died peacefully after a long illness at the age of 76, with his family at his side.  He is survived by his beloved wife of 49 years, Elizabeth, his children Otto, Jr. (wife Tracy), Kathy (husband Zsolt), and Tom (wife Michele); and his grandchildren, Kevin, Kyle, Péter, Karly, János and Kamryn.  He is also survived by his brother György of Budapest, and numerous family and friends. • Dr. Charles Simonyi Receives Kármán Tódor Award

  On December 16, Mr. Miklós Réthelyi, Minister of National Human Resources, awarded Dr. Charles Simonyi the Kármán Tódor award for 2011.  Four other individuals and organizations were also recognized.  The Kármán Tódor award was established in 2000 by the Minister of Education and Culture to recognize the contributions of individuals and corporations in supporting Hungary’s scientific, educational and research programs.   A graduate program in Hungarian Studies is again available in the United States. The Balassi Bálint Institute, Hungary’s main government agency for cultural diplomacy, has donated an endowment of $250,000 to Indiana University at Bloomington to establish a Postgraduate Fellowship in the Hungarian Studies Program.  More...

  Virtuoso pianist Gergely Bogányi will perform in two upcoming concerts sponsored by the Hungarian American Coalition.  On November 1st, he will appear at the Hungarian Embassy in Washington D.C., and on November 3rd, his concert will take place at Mixon Hall of the Cleveland Institute of Music in Cleveland, Ohio.  In both venues, he will play works by Ferenc Liszt, in this 200th anniversary year of his birth, and by Frederic Chopin, whose interpretation is Mr. Bogányi’s specialty. Megyeri, President of the Hungarian Reformed Federation of America and Coalition Board Member, was awarded the prestigious Abraham Lincoln Award by the American Hungarian Foundation at its Annual Carousel Ball in New Brunswick, NJ. • Hungary's New Constitution: Prospect for the Rule of Law and Liberty in New Europe

  On March 21, the Heritage Foundation, the Common Sense Society of Budapest and the Hungarian American Coalition co-sponsored a panel discussion on the draft Hungarian constitution. The panel took place on the eve of the Hungarian Parliament's debate of the constitutional drafts submitted by the government and by opposition political parties. The debate over the proposed text of the new Constitution is one of those rare moments in history when Hungarians in and outside of Hungary are able to consider what should be included in the most fundamental document that defines Hungary as a nation. • Hungarian American Coalition Issues Study on the Implementation of the Red Sludge Disaster Fund

  On October 4, 2010, the retaining wall of a sludge repository collapsed, at the alumina factory of Ajka, in Veszprém County, western Hungary. As a result, 600,000 cubic meters of highly alkaline, corrosive industrial waste inundated the surrounding towns and villages. Three towns were affected most directly: Devecser, Kolontár and Somlóvásárhely. But the surrounding region of over 40 square kilometers was also affected, and suffered from the ecological, economic and social disaster. More...
